Werrington Crowned Champions of Inaugural Cornish Development League

Werrington Cricket Club emerged victorious in the first-ever Cornish Development League, introduced this year by the Cornwall Cricket Board. The league was designed to help clubs transition from the softball format to hardball cricket, offering a valuable opportunity for skill development and competitive play. Six teams participated in the league, with each scheduled for 10 fixtures—five home and five away.
The competing teams included Werrington, Paul, Perranporth, Wadebridge, South Petherwin, and Helston. The league culminated in a final match at South Petherwin Cricket Club, where a large crowd gathered to witness the last game of the season. Although Werrington had already secured the league title prior to this match, the excitement was palpable as South Petherwin attempted to chase down Werrington’s challenging target of 150 runs from 30 overs.
At the halfway point of the innings, with South Petherwin slightly behind the required run rate but with nine wickets still in hand, the game hung in the balance. However, a disciplined bowling performance from Werrington in the latter stages of the innings ensured a solid victory, allowing them to finish the league on a high note.
The Werrington team and their supporters celebrated their well-deserved success enthusiastically after the game. A senior player from the team commented on their achievement, saying, " it’s been a really good experience for our cricketers and we have really enjoyed taking part in the league. The team has improved so much and we are loving it”
