It was a day when almost half the league programme (33 games) were brought forward to earlier start times due to England’s Euro quarter-final against Switzerland. It was also a day of heavy showers that interrupted all but one game in Tier 1. That was the Premier game at Truro. Elsewhere the game at Helston was abandoned and in County One at Wadebridge Seconds there was a morning cancellation. The other eight games all had Duckworth Lewis calculations deciding the outcome.
The Premier leaders Penzance suffered their second defeat when they lost by seven runs to St Austell on the DLS method. Dan Jarman made 45 and Tom Dinnis took four wickets as the Saints made 158-6 in 42 overs. Penzance were dismissed for 156 with four balls remaining after Josh Croom retired on 34. Their target had been 164 from 38 overs. Callington are up to second after beating Redruth by ten runs on the DLS method. Graham Wagg made 64 in the 207-8 with Dulash Udayanga taking 5-30. Toby Whiteford made 51 in the Redruth reply but they were dismissed with two balls remaining. Truro’s winning run came to an end as they lost at home to Wadebridge by 92 runs. Former Cornwall captain Matt Rowe made 112 and James Turpin 65 in the 245-5. Truro, who were without professional Amir Yamin, were bowled out for 153 with Callum Wilson taking four wickets. In an early start at Camborne the home side recovered from 52-6 to make 117 against Werrington with Jordan Duke taking 5-29. Werrington were shot out for 71 with Martin Jenkin taking 6-14 and Jordan Gately adding three wickets to his valuable 24 not out with the bat. A heavy mid-afternoon downpour at Helston saw the game with St Just abandoned. Sunny Osmont had rescued the home side with 68 after they had been 44-6. Needing 170 St Just were 21-2 after ten overs when the heavens opened. Penzance are out of the National Club Championship after losing their round of 16 game with Bath by 14 runs at St Clare after the visitors made 237 in their 40 overs.
Grampound Road increased their lead in Bond Timber County Division 1 thanks to a 53-run home win over nearest challengers Newquay on the DLS method. After a delayed start the Road made 145 in their 30 overs. Newquay were dismissed for 75. On Sunday the ‘Road’s’ National Village Cup tie against Horspath in Oxfordshire was abandoned at tea after a torrential downpour. It will be replayed at Grampound Road next Sunday. Paul defeated Penzance Seconds by eight wickets at St Clare knocking off the required 99 in fifteen overs. Darren Proctor made 57 and took 6-29 as Beacon beat St Erme by 61 runs. There was a close finish at Falmouth who lost to Camborne Seconds by one run in a DLS reduced-overs game. Hayle had a comfortable 63-run home win over Roche after hitting 220-8.
Penzance retained the Bradleys Vinter Cup in a memorable final at Camborne. Their skipper Ben Seabrook was named Player of the Match for his 84 as Penzance hit the third-highest final score of 183 for 4. In a valiant response, an understrength Camborne kept up with the required rate for much of their innings but late wickets proved crucial. They ended on 168 for 7 to lose by 15 runs. Alfie MacDonald made 31 and Liam Weeks 30. Tom Dinnis took 3-22. It was the highest score ever recorded by a losing team in the final beating Falmouth's 152 v St Just (173/7) in 2014.
