In the ECB Premier, only Penzance and Redruth have won both opening games. Penzance is yet to drop a point after beating St Just by seven wickets at St Clare. Andrew Libby (4-35) and Giles Lawrence (3-28) bowled St Just out for 165 after Alex McKenna made 52. Captain Ben Seabrook hit an unbeaten 78 to see Penzance home with ten overs to spare.
Redruth made short work of Werrington at Ladycross with a ten-wicket success in only the 14th over. The hosts collapsed from 37-0 to 91 all out with Ellis Whiteford taking 5-18. With rain threatening Toby Whiteford then smashed 54 not out including 4 sixes and Pete Howells was unbeaten on 30.
The thundery rain did arrive from over the border at Callington and only 34 overs were possible with Truro reaching 139-3. Jaco Van Greunan was unbeaten on 55. There was a close game at Wadebridge where the champions all but lost both opening games. They scraped home off the final ball against St Austell by one wicket. Needing nine off the final over the last pair of Kelvin Snell (26no) and Elliot Dunnett held their nerve against Gary Bone. Snell got a two off the last ball to secure the win. Needing 166 the home side were 50-4 before James Turpin made 37. Earlier Mike Bone made 60 and brother Alex 32 before Matt Lawrence took 4-24.
For the second week running the visitors were in the runs at Camborne as Helston totalled 262-7 despite being without Karl Leathley. Overseas player Lance Alberts made 75 after Billy Taylor opened with 52. Mark Jenkin, Steve Jenkin and Gavin Tregenza all passed thirty. Again Lewis Goldsworthy was the mainstay for the home side but unlike the previous week, the rest of the batting failed. He carried his bat for 57 in the 102 all out in the 33rd over. Brad Bury wrapped up the game to take 5-31.
Newquay continues to set the pace in County Division One following a 62-run home win over Wadebridge seconds. Toby Chillingworth made 53 not out and Joe Crane took four wickets. Grampound Road has also won three games after a seven-wicket home success over Penzance Seconds. Dave Neville took 5-16.
Hayle’s overseas player Benjamin Homan hit 109 to set up a 48-run win over St Erme at the Towans. Ben James made 91 for Beacon as they won by six wickets at Paul chasing 164. This after skipper Ben Brooks made 72 for the hosts. Camborne Seconds got their first win at this level with a 102-run success at Mullion. Steve Richards made 74. James Dark took 5-36 and top scored with 29 not out in Mullion’s reply of 63 as Jacob MacDonald and Will Eva shared six wickets.
Falmouth won a low-scoring game at Roche by four wickets with James Tomlinson top-scoring with 37. Adrian Noott took 4-13 as Roche was dismissed for 95.
Across the divisions, thundery rain moved west affecting the southeast of the county with nine games being abandoned.
Seven re-scheduled games were completed on Sunday in warm sunshine.
