Holsworthy celebrate 150 Years of Cricket
Holsworthy won the Division 2 ‘Raymond Reseigh Cup’ for the first time on a damp finals day at Redruth. They only played Sunday cricket before joining the Tamar Saturday League in the mid-noughties and a couple of seasons later entered Division 7 of the Cornwall Cricket League in 2008. Bude thirds were already ground sharing at Stanhope Park. There has been steady rise up the divisions since, combined with improved ground facilities. The Division 2 T20 Cup attracted 21 of a possible 24 entries this season.
In the morning semi-final, Wadebridge seconds made 136-6 with Paul Menhinick (34) and Matthew Gordon (32) putting on 59 for the second wicket. Jack Jenkin removed them both to end with 4-20. The Helston seconds reply was delayed as heavy drizzle and rain swept across the ground around midday. A minimum six-over innings was possible starting at 12:50 with the average run rate target of 42. With the help of three run-outs, Wadebridge stayed in the game. It came down to seven needed off the final over the winning leg bye came off the final ball.
The second semi-final was reduced to 19 overs a side. Holsworthy made 110-5 with Herschelle Poggenpoel hitting 40 supported by fellow opener Matthew Shepherd (27) and Ryan Walter (26no). Ty Murrell took 2-14 from four overs. Holders Perranporth reached 37 before losing their first wicket at the end of the fifth over. The innings was then sensationally blown away by spinner Poggenpoel who ended with the remarkable figures of 4-0-9-6. At 67 all out ten wickets had fallen for 30 runs, in the space of ten overs.
Much of the final was played in miserable, drizzly conditions before a late clearance. Helston lost two early wickets before Tom Mitchell made 32. They were bowled out off the penultimate ball for 100 with Jack Greening, Shepherd and Rob Mitchell taking two wickets each. To the jubilation of a coach load of travelling support, Holsworthy cruised home for the loss of two wickets, with over four overs to spare. Poggenpoel was deservedly named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 62.
Mrs Marlene Reseigh made the presentations accompanied by League President Vic Hassell and Chair Stuart Wilder.
