With three games to play the destination of this year’s Bond Timber Premier League title might be clearer after Saturday as the top two, Wadebridge and Penzance, clash at St Clare. Wadebridge go into the game with a slender three-point advantage but Saturday’s winner will be in pole position to be crowned champions, subject to the weather and a successful run in. Penzance conclude with a home game against St Austell before visiting Camborne on the final day. Wadebridge will travel to Werrington before hosting Callington.

Despite the efforts of a second named August Storm (Betty) just about a full League programme went ahead in improving conditions. Both title contenders had comfortable wins. Wadebridge bowled St Just out for 127 at Egloshayle, and that was only thanks to a late fifty from Rhys Brownfield. Kevin Renecke got 51 not out to steer the hosts to a nine-wicket win. Greg Smith hit an unbeaten 98 and Chris Gibson got 72 as Penzance made 266-5 at Helston. The home team saw the overs out to end on 187-8 after Karl Leathley made a patient 69. Hayle are looking doomed at the foot after losing a crucial game at Camborne by 94 runs. Dylan Kritzinger, who had not passed 50 since June, hammered 141 which included 14 fours and 7 sixes at a run-a-ball. Dan Stephens picked up 4-28 to all but ensure Camborne’s safety.

Callington remains 30 points off the bottom after losing a low-scoring game at Werrington where Sam Hockin contributed 64 in the home side’s 108. Harry Sawyers took 5-23 and Graham Wagg 4-20. Callington were shot out for 80 with Ben Smeeth taking 4-21. Having lost their last five games, and picked up only 17 bonus points, Redruth are in ‘freefall’ and are now in the bottom three. They were dismissed for 50 at home to St Austell with Adam Snowdon taking four wickets. St Austell strengthened their third spot with an eight-wicket success.

Standings after 15 /18 games: Wadebridge 242 pts, Penzance 239, St Austell 196, Werrington 181, St Just 164, Helston 162, Camborne 159, Redruth 152, Callington 146, Hayle 116.

The much-anticipated title clash in County Division 1 lived up to the hype as Truro dramatically beat Falmouth by just one run. Charlie Kent was Truro’s late hero as he made a direct hit to effect a run out in the penultimate over before holding on to a sharp return catch with three balls remaining, to end with 4-26. Paul moved up to second, eight points behind, after equally dramatic events at Hutchens Park. They had been knocked over by relegation-threatened Redruth seconds for just 71 but fought back to dismiss the visitors for only 41, with Matthew Skewes taking 5-18.

Not surprisingly in the drying conditions, there were low scores elsewhere. St Erme only made 73 against Newquay but it was enough to win by 13 runs. Doomed Lanhydrock were bowled out for 91 at Penzance seconds and lost by nine wickets. Ben James took 5-25 to dismiss Mullion for 130 at Beacon who went on to win by five wickets. Grampound Road’s batters enjoyed conditions at Roche to hit 222-5 with young Harry Gregory making a century. Tom Hughes took five wickets to secure a 102-run victory which just about makes the ‘Road’ safe - having won six of the last eight starts.

They lost a rescheduled game at Penzance on Sunday, however, by four wickets after making 175 with Tom Orpe making 64 and Glyn Furnival taking five wickets. A third win on the bounce has propelled Penzance into a creditable fourth spot.

Standings after 19 /22 games: Truro 283 pts, Paul 275, Falmouth 273, Penzance II 230, Beacon 226, St Erme 214, Mullion 212, Newquay 207,  Grampound Road 198, Redruth II 159, Roche 154. Lanhydrock 111.

There were some notable events in the lower divisions.

In Division 2 West Jordan Harvey’s sensational figures were 9-5-8-8 (7 bowled, 1 lbw) for title-chasing Camborne in an eight-wicket win at Ludgvan

Lloyd Brock 164 & 5-33 for Mount Hawke & Porthtowan at Hayle.

In Division 3 West Callum Stephens 8-5-7-6 for Falmouth at home to Barripper

In Division 4 East 377 runs were scored at Buckland Monachorum before a wicket fell! Jim Maunder (119no) and Gary Elkington (114no) saw the home side to 252-0 off their 40 overs. Bugle’s openers Paul Gribble and Grant Kennett responded by putting on 125 in reply.

In Division 5 West Treve Polglase hit 239 for Rosudgeon & Kenneggy at Mount Hawke & Porthtowan
