Where and when league titles are won can vary from year to year and Penzance retained the Bond Timber Premier League title on Saturday in more unusual circumstances. They beat Hayle convincingly at home by eight wickets by 5.30pm but that in itself was not enough. It was only eighty minutes later when news came through that St Just had lost at St Austell by 24 runs that Penzance were certain of the title with two games to spare. Hayle had been dismissed for 144 with Tom Dinnis taking 4-27. Jack Paull (62no) and Ben Seabrook (45no) secured the comfortable victory. The presentation will be made at St Clare following Saturday’s home game with Camborne. Alex Bone made 77 and Michael Harding 51 to see St Austell to 194-7 at Wheal Eliza. St Just were all out for 170. At the bottom only five points now cover Truro, Werrington and Callington with two games to play.
