The chances of Penzance retaining their Bond Timber Cornwall Premier League title have significantly increased in the last fortnight. Successive victories have been bolstered by back-to-back defeats for challengers Wadebridge and St Just. A fifteen--point gap has been increased to 42 points with six rounds remaining. Camborne, having won four of their last five games, have joined St Just and Wadebridge in a three-way tie for second place. Penzance were set 217 at home to Callington for whom overseas player Rumesh Buddhika made 77 and Ollie Allsop 66 sharing a third-wicket stand of 142. Opener Jack Paull batted through to make 89 and ease the champions home by seven wickets with over seven overs to spare. St Just were bowled out for 112 at home to Camborne who lost their first five wickets for 19 in reply. They were saved by a seventh-wicket stand of 77 from Liam Weeks (45) and Martin Jenkin (41no) to win by three wickets in the 39th over. Chamikara Edirisinghe returned figures of 10-3-12-4. Wadebridge were surprised by bottom side Truro who after going nine games without a win have now won two on the bounce. Rob Harrison took 5-33 to bowl Wadebridge out for 172. New recruit Chesney Hughes, the former Derbyshire first-class player, made 67 on debut sharing an opening stand of 122 with Dan Davis (65). Truro won by six wickets with 17 overs to spare and have reduced the gap to 20 points behind Callington. They face back-to -back key games against Werrington and Callington this month. Werrington suffered a sixth defeat when they went down by 52 runs at St Austell for whom Gary Bone made 72 not out and Jonny Leadbeater took 5-23. Ben Smeeth made 65 in the Werrington reply of 165 but they were 53 runs short of the target. Redruth remain in fifth after winning at Hayle by 61 runs. Lloyd Brock made 63 not out to get them to 187-8. Tom Sharp hit 50 in the Hayle reply.
It’s as you were in County Division 1 with the top three all taking maximum points. Helston maintain a 36 point advantage after winning by eight wickets at Redruth. Dan Jenkin’s 111 not out anchored the reply of 195-2. Similarly, Beacon’s Jordan Thomas made 120 and Darren Proctor hit 78 in the 268-4 at Werrington which led to a win by 123 runs. It leaves Werrington 61 points from safety and they have played a game more. Grampound Road had a closer call beating Newquay by 19 runs. Paul move up to fourth after hitting 270-7 and gaining a 15 run win at Falmouth. Lanhydrock are now equal second bottom with Callington after a two-wicket home win over St Erme. Callington lost by five wickets at home to Mullion after former England International Jamie Dalrymple took 5-22.
