Sat 23 July Review
It was a day of light rain and drizzle across parts of the county with a number of games either having delayed starts or interruptions. The south-east had the worst of the conditions with the games at Callington in the Premier, Menheniot Looe (after three balls), Luckett, Boconnoc and Gunnislake all being abandoned. It might have proved to be a pivotal day in the Premier League with leaders Penzance winning whilst their nearest challengers Wadebridge and St Just both lost. Penzance now lead St Just by 27 points with Wadebridge a further point behind and just seven games to play. The Redruth versus Penzance game had a delayed start with play reduced to a 30 -over game. Toby Whiteford got the Redruth innings off to a bright start making 42 and opening partner Rohan Wight anchored making 67 off 83 balls in the 169-5. Opening the batting Antony Angove guided his side to victory with 81 not out. Christian Purchase hit 38 as the champions got home with seven wickets and two overs to spare. The one Duckworth Lewis result came at Werrington who beat Wadebridge by eight wickets. In an interrupted innings, the visitors made 156-8 in 35 overs with Sam Richards making 52 and Mark Taskis taking 4-37. Werrington’s revised target was 184 in 35 overs and they got home with 15 balls to spare thanks to unbeaten half-centuries from Adam Hodgson and Mark Gribble. Truro final got off the mark with a 37-run home win over St Just. Truro gave a debut to all-rounder Kashif Ali, who on Monday made a first-class debut for Worcestershire against Derbyshire. Joe Phillips made 50 in Truro’s 168 with Chammy Edirisinghe taking 5-27. The experience of Rob Harrison (4-32) and Neil Ivamy (3-16) finally brought some relief to Boscawen Park as the visitors were bowled out for 131. A delayed start at Camborne saw a 30-over game against Hayle with Liam Weeks dominating the home innings with 89 in the 164-7. Sam Mycock made 52 for the visitors but they ended 18 runs short of victory. Only six overs were possible at Callington where St Austell reached 36 without loss in a brisk start.
In County Division 1 Helston extended their lead over Beacon to 36 points with seven games to play. After reaching 102-1 Falmouth collapsed to 159 all out with Steve Jenkin taking 6-36. Opener John Richardson continued his good form with 85 before being ninth out. Dan Jenkin (71no) and Billy Taylor (44) put on 118 for the first wicket and victory followed, by nine wickets with 21 overs to spare. Ben James hit 80 for Beacon in their 21-run win over neighbours Redruth seconds in a 27-over game. Former England player Jamie Dalrymple made an unbeaten 75 on his Mullion debut to defeat Grampound Road by two wickets after Alex Lean made 80 for the ‘Road’. Joe Crane hit 62 to steer Newquay to an important bottom-of-the-table win over Werrington seconds. On his return to Paul, after nine years at St Just, Callum Donnelly made 33 and took three wickets in the 86-run win over Lanhydrock. Callum Edgcombe and Kyle Van Rooyen hit half-centuries as St Erme overwhelmed Callington seconds by 171 runs. Spencer Wilcock (5-32) and Van Rooyen (4-33) were amongst the wickets. Hayle Seconds won the Andrew Cup for the second time with a 20 runs victory over Praze in an entertaining final at Mount Ambrose Cricket Club. Hayle added 45 over the last four overs to reach 135-8. Praze replied with 115 all out with eight balls remaining. Paul Glanville was the ‘Bunny Wiliams’ Player of the match taking four key wickets for 19 runs. On Sunday Cornwall entertain Somerset CCC in an NCCA Showcase game at Truro’s Boscawen Park. The 50-over game gets underway at 11 am.
