St Just won the WT Edwards Cup for the 14th time with a seven-run win in a well-contested game at Truro's Boscawen Park. It's the sixth defeat in nine appearances for Werrington. They last won in 2013 against Falmouth but have lost in four finals since. It was the fifth time the clubs have clashed in the final since 2005. Werrington won the first two but St Just added to their 2011 and 2014 successes thanks to a fine all-around performance from skipper Gareth May who was named player of the match for his 64 and 3-19 from four overs.
After electing to bat St Just lost Max Waller for 18 in the fifth over. Stalwarts May and Neil Curnow then combined to add 93 for the second wicket in ten overs. May was dismissed by Mark Taskis for 64 off 45 balls that included 2 sixes and 8 fours. Curnow was dismissed soon after by Darren Webber for 46 at 134-3 only for Philip Nicholas to hit his first two balls for six in an eventful 17th over. Werrington fought back, however, in the last three overs only conceding 15 runs and taking the wickets of Steve Kevern, Mark George and Josh Semmens.
Needing 162 Ben Stevens removed Dan Barnard with the fourth ball of the innings. Adam Hodgson made a breezy19 including 14 off three successive balls from Stevens before being dismissed at 46 at the beginning of the sixth over. Mark Gribble (33) joined Ben Smeeth to add 68 for the third wicket before May got the breakthrough and followed up two balls later by bowling Ben Jenkin. With 27 needed off 14 balls, May had Smeeth excellently caught by Dominic Angove for 69. Chamikara Edirisinghe only conceded three singles off the penultimate over and despite 15 coming off Max Waller’s final, over with Nick Lawson unbeaten on 22, the North Cornwall side ended up eight runs short.
