Werrington won the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup for a ninth time defeating hosts St Austell by seven wickets with five overs to spare at a sunlit Wheal Eliza.

St Austell have now been runners–up in three of the last four finals.

The game was virtually decided at the outset with Dan Barnard (2-22) removing Jonny Leadbeater and Hugh Parkinson in the opening over.

Then in the fourth over Ben Smeeth  (4-12) dismissed Scott Barrott and Alex Bone in successive balls and St Austell were on the ropes at 10-4.

Adam Hodgson had Gary Bone caught and when James Carter followed it was 33-6.

However, Michael Harding (45) and David Munn (15) combined to add 47 for the seventh wicket and the innings got to 101-9 with Harding stumped off the penultimate ball from Smeeth.

In contrast, Smeeth and Barnard added 75 for Werrington’s first wicket before Smeeth was caught behind off James Carter for 27.

Hodgson was lbw next ball and Mark Gribble was run out near the end but the ‘Tris Bax’ Player of the Match Barnard was undefeated on 56 with 3 sixes off 44 balls as victory came with five overs remaining.

Werrington will play Penzance or St Just in the WT Edwards Cup Final at Truro on Wednesday 13 July.

St Austell – St Austell 101-9 (M Harding 45, D Munn 15; B Smeeth 4-12, D Barnard 2-22) lost to Werrington 102-3 (D Barnard 56no, B Smeeth 27; J Carter 2-7) by seven wickets. Player of the Match – Dan Barnard.
