Saturday 11 June Review

Penzance are 27 points clear in the Bond Timber Premier League after just five games following their top of the table clash at St Austell. The winning margin was 38 runs but in reality, much of the game was well balanced. Penzance lost half their wickets for 88 and got to 162 all out with Antony Angove making 41 and Jack Paull  23. Matthew Lloyd and Jonty Leadbeater shared six wickets. The Saints were reduced to 35-4 before the Bone brothers Alex (46) and Gary (23) added 66 for the fifth wicket with a tight finish seemingly looming. Ali Usman (4-20) and Greg Smith (3-25) had different ideas with the last five wickets falling for five runs at 124 all out with six overs to spare. Penzance have a big weekend at St Clare with the derby with St Just on Saturday followed by the visit of Bridgwater in the Royal London Cup on Sunday. Hayle are having a great start to their return to the top flight. Dan Lello led the way at Callington with 132 including 10 sixes as they posted 288-3. Sam Mycock made 66. Tom Sharp was 39 not out and then took 5-19 from ten overs to seal a 154 run success. Wadebridge are equal second after dominating at Camborne. Kevin Renecke made 88 and James Turpin and Kelvin Snell 45 apiece in the 247-8. Jamie MacDonald took 4-45. Camborne were dismissed for 102. All seven Wadebridge bowlers took wickets led by Callum Wilson. Kelvin Snell and Charlie Ellis with two each. There was drama at Redruth where the match with St Just was tied. Neil Curnow made 50 as the visitors got to 182-8, having been 142-2 at one stage. Ellis Whiteford took 4-32. Jack Hale replied with 42 and Karl Leathley made 38. It came down to 19 required off two overs with the last pair of Whiteford and Craig Johnson at the crease. Eleven were needed off the last over and two off the final ball but Michael Fitchett restricted Whiteford to a single. The bottom of the table clash at Werrington was more clear-cut as the home side beat Truro by eight wickets. Dan Davis made 51 as Truro got to 149 all out. Dan Barnard and Adam Hodgson took three wickets each. Taylor Gerry (65) and Ben Smeeth (58no) eased Werrington home with a second wicket stand of 102. The win came with eight overs to spare.

In County Division 1 leaders Beacon march on with a ninth win on the trot. Jordan Thomas made 92 in the 131-run home win over Callington seconds. Helston are now only 12 points behind after a double-winning weekend at Beacon Parc. Captain Steve Jenkin hit a maiden century (100no) and brother Dan got 88 in the 278-6 against Grampound Road. Will Eva then took 5-18 to secure a 149-run win. In the rescheduled game with Paul on Sunday Helston were reduced to 34-5 but Steve Jenkin (69) and Tom Mitchell (66) got to a respectable 216-9. Paul were 55-5 in reply and ended on 173 all out with Steve Jenkin completing a fine weekend with three wickets. Mullion’s good season continued with a six-wicket win at Newquay. Lachlan Mark (76no) and Matthew Davies (46no) steered them to 222-4 after Grant Stone hit a century for the hosts.  The Kyle van Rooyen show did for Falmouth at St Erme. He made 67 in the 195 all out and then took 6-22 as Falmouth were dismissed for 80. Werrington seconds are still looking for a win after defeat at Paul by 92 runs, for whom Ben Brooks made 105 and Dylan York took 5-23 in a 92-run success. Alastair Faull (69) and Luke Johnson (53) led the way for Redruth seconds at Lanhydrock in their 255-8. Josh Pengilly then took 4-11 to secure a 76-run win.
