It was a great weekend for Penzance with two big wins at either end of the county. On Saturday they completely dominated at Callington recording a massive 260 run success. It was their third successive maximum point haul in defence of the Bond Timber Premier League title. Then on Sunday in the Royal London Cup home tie against Swansea they won by three wickets. It sets up a third round tie against Bridgwater or Sandford on 19 June at St Clare. They have to replay after rain abandoned play on Sunday with Bridgwater on 130-7 in the closing overs. It was one-way traffic at Callington with Christian Purchase (41), Jonny Ludlam (71) and Ali Usman (63) seeing the 200 up before Greg Smith (63no) and Tom Wells (45no) got to 324-5 in 50 overs. Callington were dismissed for 64 with Tom Dinnis removing Sri Lankan professional Rumesh Buddhika second ball on debut. Former St Just, Penzance and Cornwall player Brad Wadlan returned to St Clare for Swansea and held the innings together making 100 before being last out at 175 with seven balls to go. The Welsh had been in trouble at 63-5 after Giles Lawrence took 3-20 from eight overs. Greg Smith made 34 and Tom Wells 43 and despite some late wickets Jack Paull and Lawrence saw their side home. St Austell are also unbeaten after a five wicket win at Werrington. Dan Barnard top scored with 60 in Werrington’s 206. The visitors had work to do at 121-5 but Australian Jonty Leadbeater hit an unbeaten 76 to secure victory in the 47th over. There was a tight finish at Camborne who beat St Just by just one wicket with five balls to spare. It was like old times for the visitors with Gary Thomas recalled after six years and teaming up with second team skipper Mark George at a venue both had dominated in so many Vinter Cup Finals in the past. Chasing 161 Jamie Goldsworthy (56) led the home side but the last pair of Jordan Harvey and Ryan Downing came together with nine required. Steve Kevern made 62 for the Saints after they had been 48-4. Redruth got off the mark with a 58 run home win over Hayle. Reds skipper Pete Howells hit 65 to see his side to 188-9 after James Franklin took 4-29. Marc Sweeney made 53 for the visitors with Craig Johnson taking 4-14. Truro are still looking for a win after Wadebridge won at Boscawen Park by 90 runs. Opener Kevin Renecke made 117 before James Turpin ran riot. His eighth six off the final ball of the innings took him to 99 not out off just 41 balls. Needing 321 Truro made a respectable 230-7 with Elliot Bamber Jones unbeaten on 62.
In County Division One something has to give at Grampound Road on Saturday where Beacon arrive as leaders, just one point to the good, both sides having won all seven games. Jordan Thomas hit a century and took 4-19 in Beacon’s 82 run home win over Werrington seconds. It was closer at Newquay but the Road won by 20 runs after making 197. Helston kept the pressure on with a five wicket win at home to Redruth seconds with Dan Jenkin unbeaten on 88. Stefan Churcher made 65 not out to help Falmouth to a seven wicket win at Paul. James Dark top scored with 37 as Mullion beat visitors Callington seconds by four wickets. Kyle Van Rooyen took four wickets and made 43 in St Erme’s seven wicket success at home to Lanhydrock.
