The first ever Duckworth Lewis result was recorded in County Division 1.

Penzance could hardly have made a better start to the defence of their Bond Timber Premier League title after the most emphatic of wins at last year’s runners up Truro. They cruised to a huge 295 run victory at Boscawen Park. Only skipper Neil Ivamy, Charlie Kent and Joel Brierley played for the hosts in the corresponding fixture last August whereas Penzance had only a couple of changes.  Christian Purchase dominated the Penzance innings hitting exactly 200 off 145 balls including 8 sixes and 25 fours. It is only the third double hundred since the top tier County Division was formed in 1990. Neil Curnow made 229 for St Just in 2013 and Alex Tunnadine 209 not out for Menheniot ten years earlier. Jonny Ludlam might have raised a few eyes when he opened the batting for Penzance but he made 50 in an opening stand of 186 with Purchase in 30 overs. Skipper Greg Smith made 64 in the 374-3. Unbelievably Truro slumped to 4-4 with three County batsmen, past and present, Kent, Dan Davis and Barry Purchase getting ducks. They were all out for 79 in 18 overs with Tom Dinnis taking 5-37 and Giles Lawrence 5-33. Elsewhere Hayle made a dream return to the top division with a 61 run win at Wadebridge. Sam Mycock made 68 and Tom Sharp 49 with Chris Rogers taking five wickets. Needing 238 the home side was all out for 176 with Matt Robins getting 51. Ben Smeeth made 109 to steer Werrington to 228 at home to St Just with Max Waller taking 5-54. St Just, who included three under 16s, made 178 with Smeeth completing a fine game with four wickets. Duckworth Lewis determined the outcome of the games in the Mining area. Redruth made 206 at home to Callington with Jack Hale getting 87 and stalwarts Alex Mortimore and Jim Shorten sharing eight wickets. After a rain delay in mid-innings the Callington target was reduced to 153 in 33 overs, which they achieved for the loss of seven wickets with five balls to spare. St Austell posted 192 at Camborne and the hosts were in trouble at 65-5 off 31 overs when play was called off. Camborne were 54 runs short of the par score at the time.

Beacon and Grampound Road are tied at the top of County Division One having dropped just two points in their opening five games. Beacon defeated Falmouth by seven wickets with Jordan Thomas making 54 against his former club. The ‘Road’ won at Callington seconds by six wickets chasing down 116 with Alex Ridd making 37. Redruth seconds are third after a five wicket win at Newquay. Dan Jenkin was unbeaten on 52 for Helston when rain ended play at home to Lanhydrock. Helston were 41 runs ahead on Duckworth Lewis with eight wickets in hand. Mullion got their third win with a 59 run success over Werrington seconds and St Erme are also in the top half after beating Paul by 120 runs at the Castle Field. Sam Townsend made 95 not out. In the lower divisions Werrington’s Rob May was stranded on 199 not out against Boconnoc seconds in Division 5 East and  Camborne fourths staged a remarkable late comeback from 85-8 to put on 92 for the ninth wicket and win at Ludgvan.

Plymouth conceded to Penzance in the Royal London National Club Championship on Sunday. Penzance have to wait to know who their second round opponents will be on 29 May as Clevedon and Swansea were abandoned after 24 overs due to rain and will be replayed next Sunday.
