CCL Week 4 Review - 7 May

Cornwall League Season Preview           Official Tables              Full Scorecards

Saturday 7 May:  71 Matches             69 Wins                  2 Concessions

Sunday 8 May:         2 Matches              2 Wins

The Premier T20 Kernow Crash pool games concluded on Saturday with the continuation of fine weather enabling all four weekends of the competition to be played out in full. Going into the final day it was mathematically possible for all teams, with the exception of Truro, to qualify for Finals Day. It turned out that double victories for St Austell and Penzance meant they topped their pools. St Just got the victory they needed and despite losing both games the superior run rate that Wadebridge had built up was comfortably high enough to deny holders Callington the opportunity to defend their title. This year’s finals day, again at Grampound Road CC, is being played at the first available Cup and County free Sunday, on  3 July. Penzance will play Wadebridge in the morning semi-final and St Austell meet St Just in the afternoon. St Austell got the better of Wadebridge at Wheal Eliza in two tight games. Needing 137 to win they got home by six wickets with only four overs to spare. Jonty Leadbeater made 49 and Dan Jarman 38. Adam Snowdon took 5-9 in the second game to bowl Wadebridge out for 98. The Saints lost seven wickets before getting over the line with Alex Bone making 31. Elliot Dunnett took 4-16. Callington did all they could in beating Werrington twice. Matt Shepherd made 44 as the 137 target was chased down in the 17th over for the loss of three wickets. Ollie Allsop made 61 in the second tie to help the home side reach  169-5. Werrington made 111-9 in response but in truth whatever they totalled wouldn’t have been enough to see Callington go through on net run rate. In Pool A all five teams started the day with a chance of qualifying. St Just needed only one win against Camborne at Cape Road and they managed it in a tight first game. Liam Weeks made 35 to get the visitors to 119-8, Neil Curnow made 30 but it came to the last over with five still required. With two needed off three balls, Jacob Harvey hit the winning boundary. Camborne managed a consolation victory in the second game with Lewis Goldsworthy making 52 and Simon Hosking 47 not out. After losing a game on each of the previous three weekends Penzance made no mistake with two emphatic nine-wicket victories to end Redruth’s hopes. Tom Wells and Christian Purchase got thirties to chase down the 99 in the first game with eight overs to spare, boosting the run rate should it had been required.  Lloyd Brock made 68 in the second game for the Reds but needing 145 Purchase went to town smashing 94 (8x6s, 10x4s) to see victory in just nine overs. Hayle finished third in the pool with two wins over Truro at a hazy Towans. Sam Mycock and Marc Sweeney made half-centuries and Tom Sharp took three wickets in both games against his former club.

In County Division 1 Grampound Road remain top after a 61 run win at Werrington. Beacon are just a point behind after Ben James made 145 at Paul, for whom skipper Ben Brooks made 84 in reply. Stefan Churcher scored 73 to help Falmouth to a 36 run win over Mullion. Ben Attfield hit a century for Lanhydrock in a high scoring game of 519 runs against Newquay, who ended only 18 short of victory. Redruth made 318-5 at home to Callington seconds with Jarrod Hambly hitting 121 and Connor  Poulton 79. The victory followed by 162 runs. There was a tight finish at St Erme where Helston won in the final over by two wickets, having been set 207.
