Saturday 28 August Review
Penzance have retained the Bond Timber ECB Cornwall Premier League following victory over Wadebridge on Saturday. In itself, that was not quite enough but the dropping of three bonus points by Truro in their win over St Just ensured the outcome of the title, with two games to spare. The Trophy presentation will be made on Saturday following the final home game of the season, against St Just. The victory over Wadebridge was as close a game as any this season with the winning margin just 15 runs. Jack Paull made 55 and Tom Wells 48 to see Penzance to 242-7. In a solid batting performance, all eight batsmen got double figures. Callum Wilson took 3-56. Matt Jolliffe made 36 and the visitors were looking good at 129-1 before Sam Richards fell for 59. They got to 200-5 with five overs remaining before being bowled out for 227 with Ali Usman taking 5-35. Truro won a low scoring game at home to St Just by 55 runs to all but guarantee runners-up spot. Rahul Dalal made 62 in the 137 all out. Neil Ivamy (5-14) and Kyle van Rooyen (4-23) bowled St Just out for 82 with Neil Curnow top-scoring with 21. Half-centuries from Toby Whiteford and Sam Wyatt got Redruth to 220-8 in the derby with Camborne at Trewirgie. With Steve Richards getting 39 and Liam Weeks 45 the visitors were handily placed at 133-3 but Ravindu Sembakutty (4-37) and Ellis Whiteford (3-16) ended the innings at 179 in the 46th over. St Austell and Callington played out a superb game at Wheal Eliza with the Saints getting home by two wickets with two balls to spare. Dan Davis (58) and Nick Parker (51) put on 93 for Callington’s fourth wicket on their way to 210-9. Both were dismissed by Gary Bone who ended with 4-34. Alex Bone made 67 in the reply to leave six needed off the last over. It came down to two off three balls before Adam Snowdon hit a maximum. Grampound Road are ensured of finishing bottom after losing at Werrington by 55 runs. Adam Hodgson made 73 to see the home side to 219-7. He then took 4-30 to bowl the ‘Road’ out for 164 after Alex Ridd top scored with 50.
The top five all took maximum points in County Division One to leave Hayle with a seven-point advantage over Helston with two to play. Hayle made 271-8 at St Erme with Tim Marrion and Matt Lello making fifties. Callum Edgcombe hit 87 in the reply of 172.
