For the first time, this year in the Bond Timber ECB Cornwall Premier League the opponents of Penzance achieved more points than the champions-elect. Few would have thought bottom club Grampound Road would achieve that but it was the case on Saturday, albeit with the help of the weather. After early morning rain cleared a belt of heavy rain moved from west to east between lunch and tea. Games in the west were able to complete, some with delayed starts,  while further east there were abandonments. One was at Grampound Road where Penzance had reached 90-2 off 25 overs with the Road picking up a bonus point. Truro closed the gap to 41 points with a 113 run victory in a game reduced to 37 overs at Wadebridge. Ahead of his full Cornwall debut, seventeen -year old Joe Phillips made 83 not out in the 202-4. Joel Brierley then took 5-21 to bowl Wadebridge out for 103. St Austell won a low scoring game at St Just which was reduced to 40 overs after a delayed start. Gary Bone took 4-16 to bowl the hosts out for 93. St Austell lost seven wickets in reaching the target with Ben Ellis and Kian Roberts taking two wickets each. Callington made 181-9 at home to Redruth with Rhys Davies making 76. Joe Cockings and Ellis Whiteford took two wickets. Only five balls of the Redruth innings was possible before rain ended proceedings. Camborne’s home game with Werrington was cancelled after a Covid outbreak in the home camp.

The County Division 1 title race took a twist as leaders Hayle lost for only the second time. After being set 154 Beacon skipper Jordan Thomas made an unbeaten 82 to see his side to a four-wicket victory. Helston have narrowed the gap to seven points with three games to play after beating St Erme at Beacon Parc by eight wickets. Brad Bury took 4-28. Newquay won at St Austell by four wickets in a match reduced to 42 overs. Set 136 Michael Harding hit 76 not out. Less than ten overs were possible at Lanhydrock where Paul had reached 23-3. Werrington seconds were all out for 172 at home to Falmouth, who were unable to start their reply. Gorran conceded for the second time being unable to fulfil their fixture at Redruth seconds.
