CCL Week 5 Review – 15 May 2021
Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Weekly Review
Matches 69, Wins 53, Abandoned 0, Cancelled 16, Conceded 0
Following an unsettled week and a belt of Friday night rain further showers along the south coast on Saturday morning saw 16 of the 69 games cancelled. South East Cornwall was hardest hit while in the west it was virtually a dry day.
The ECB Cornwall Premier League got underway with champions Penzance starting their defence in a reduced 43 over game at Callington. At 64-5 and 116-7 Penzance had problems but Tom Wells came to the rescue with 91 before being run out to post 190-8. The home side were reduced to 126-7 to leave too much for the tail as Greg Smith took 4-19. Lunchtime rain at Truro saw a ninety-minute delay and a 35 over game against Grampound Road. The visitors were soon struggling at 9-4 and had Club Chairman Lewis Sanders to thank for his 33 that got them to 112 all out in the 33rd over. Truro were reduced to 19-5 themselves with Alex Ridd picking up four wickets. Spinner Indian Virendra Yadav might be small in stature but he produced a big performance to take 5-22 and secure a famous win for the ‘Road’ by 40 runs.
The game at Truro was live-streamed as was Camborne’s with Wadebridge – a technological first ever double for the League. An inspired spell of 5-22 from Ryan Downing saw Wadebridge reduced to 48-5 at one stage but 56 from Matt Robins, who was last out, supported by Callum Wilson (22) and Chris Rogers (25) boosted the total to 153. That turned out to be plenty as Camborne were dismissed for 98 with Kelvin Snell taking four wickets. Ironically Camborne professional Lewis Goldsworthy was inactive at Taunton where Somerset’s four-day match with Surrey only saw 68 overs of play on the Friday.
St Austell got off to a winning start with a seven-wicket home win over Redruth. Play got underway on time but a shower took ten overs out of the game. That proved irrelevant as Redruth were dismissed for 96. Jack Hale made 56 and Liam Watson took 4-34. Mike Bone’s half-century saw the Saints home. Redruth have been boosted by the news this week that Indian Ravindu Sembakutty is out of quarantine and available for selection.
Werrington to St Just is a long way especially when you lose but that was the case on Saturday for the North Cornwall club. Steve Kevern (36) and Gareth May (32) put on 72 for the first wicket but that became 145-9 before Josh Semmens (31no) and Ben Ellis (21) added 48 for the last wicket to get to 193. Sri Lankan Chamikara Edirisinghe, on debut, took 4-7 to bowl Werrington out for 62.
Hayle remain top of County Division 1 following a six-wicket victory at Werrington where Tom Sharp made an unbeaten 36 in chasing down 124. Dan Howgill got 41 for the hosts. Helston are just a point behind after a nine-wicket success at Redruth. Karl Leathley 81no and Mark Jenkin 47no shared a stand of 129. Paul were well beaten by Beacon in one of the Bond Timber Trophy finals last September but they got revenge at Hutchens Park winning a thriller by one wicket. James Gool made 65 in Beacon’s 152. Grant Stone hit 94 and Dan Ogden took 5-8 as Newquay finally got off the mark, against Gorran. Duncan Ayres took 4-18 to bowl St Erme out for 79 and set up a six -wicket win for Falmouth at the Hine Downing Oval. Lanhydrock’s home game with St Austell was cancelled with the teams present but the outfield was too wet.
A remarkable story at Pencarrow saw their number 11, fifteen-year-old Isaac Jago, come to the crease in his first competitive game with 12 needed off the last four balls against Werrington fourths. He hit his first ball for six. Two singles followed and with four required off the last ball Jago planted a second six into the neighbouring field to end up 13no off three balls and in doing so securing a stunning victory that will live long in the memory.
The highest individual score of the season came at Roche where Darren Jenkin hit 198 not out for Launceston seconds in a match of 578 runs. Harry Watkins scored 160 for Perranporth at Penzance. Luke Stuckey took 7-23 and made 31 for Leedstown in their win at Truro while in the Division 3 East St Neot against Newquay game Jack Kent took 7-27 and Terry Venter replied with 7-32 for Newquay to win by seven runs.
