The 2021 season began under blue skies, albeit on the chilly side, but with firm pitches thanks to the very dry month or so pre-season. Matches across the county paused at 3 pm to mark the minute’s silence in respect of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

The Premier League season began with the first round of games in the Tribute T20 Kernow Crash with doubleheaders across five venues. Penzance won the inaugural competition in 2019 and got their defence off to the best of starts with two convincing wins at Grampound Road. The hosts were restricted to 70-8 in the first game and Christian Purchase wasted no time making 38 in 19 balls to seal the win by eight wickets in just six overs. In the second game, Purchase made 90 hitting 6 sixes and 12 fours off 31 balls. Debutant Dan Lello hit 67 off 33 balls as the visitors reached 222-3. Charlie Hoskings got 49 in the reply of 109-7.

Wadebridge also got a double-winning start at St Austell. James Turpin (105) and Matt Butler (78) put on 166 for the first wicket in 13 overs. Liam Watson took 3-33 in the 217-4. Alex Bone was run out for 49 in the reply of 143 all out. The second game was much closer with Wadebridge squeezing home by six runs. Debutant Matt Robins (48) and former county colleague Kelvin Snell (46) saw the visitors to 175-4. Alex Bone (48) and James Carter (58) got the Saints close in a hectic finale but Callum Wilson’s 3-20 proved crucial.

Callington won both games against Werrington at Moores Park. The returning Dan Davis made 60 in the 133-8. Harry Sawyers took 3-11 from four overs as Werrington were bowled out for 79 in the 18th over. They fared better the second time around reaching 161-4 with Dan Barnard’s half-century leading the way and new skipper Nick Lawson unbeaten on 38. The home side made light work, however, as Kian Burns (97) and Aidan Libby (63no) put on 158 for the first wicket and victory came by nine wickets with 38 balls to spare.

Redruth won both games at St Just by narrow margins. Jack Hale got 42 in their 132-6. Philip Nicholas was unbeaten on 35 as the hosts ended three runs short. Ellis Whiteford took 4-24. In their second dig skipper, Pete Howells got 34 in the 118 all out with a ball to spare. Ben Ellis took 3-18. St Just skipper Gareth May made 33 at the top of the order but Craig Johnson’s 4-11 from 4 overs saw the last pair nine runs short of victory.

Roskear was the only venue where the honours ended even. Camborne made 107-6 with Simon Hosking unbeaten on 47. After Truro’s Charlie Kent made 33 returning Scott Harvey was undefeated on 46 in the eight-wicket victory in the 19th over. A half-century from Lewis Goldsworthy got the home side to 130-5 in the second game. His brother Jamie, also on debut, took 3-17 to restrict Truro to 110-7. Harvey again top-scored with 31.

There was a dramatic opening day in County Division 1 with wins for newcomers Hayle, Paul and St Erme while it was a case of ‘welcome to County 1’ for Falmouth who lost at Lanhydrock. Falmouth’s first-ever game in the second tier saw them make 154 with Scott Kellow top-scoring with 47. Jack Trethewey replied with 36 and despite Kellow’s 4-26, the hosts got home by three wickets.

St Erme got off to a winning start at Redruth seconds who were bowled out for 160 with number 10, recruit Adam Grigg making 44. Callum Edgcombe (31no) and Graham Hill (18no) put together a match-winning eighth-wicket stand for the visitors. Paul and Newquay were both making a return to County 1 and the home side dominated at Hutchens Park as Newquay were dismissed for 97, with Jacob Pengelly taking 4-16. Kameron Collins (32no) and Ben Brooks (37no) ensured a nine-wicket victory.

The story at Hayle was the return of former Cornwall and Truro skipper Tom Sharp after three years out of the game. He made an unbeaten 55 and Matt Lello was 63 not out in a stand of 149 to secure a nine-wicket win over St Austell seconds. Alan George hit fifty for the visitors as James Frankin and Matt Jacka shared eight wickets. Helston won their big clash with Beacon by 57 runs after making 259-6. Opener Karl Leathley hit 109 not out and Dan Jenkin 88 in a first-wicket stand of 161. James Gool was run out for 97 and Jordan Thomas got 59 in the Beacon reply. Gorran only made 89 at Werrington with Jason Seldon taking 5-13. Scott Taskis was 54 not out in the nine-wicket win.

Elsewhere Joe Tunnicliffe made 161 not out for Praze at Gulval and Luke Stuckey 132 for Leedstown at Gerrans. He shared a stand of 203 with Aaron Futcher but ended up on the losing side as the hosts reached their 259 target.

There were remarkably twelve centurions on the opening weekend.

Dan Wills (Barripper), Jacob Rowe (Roche firsts) and Liam Phillips (Roche seconds) got six-wicket hauls.
