During 2023 Cornwall Development Squad (Choughs) played a number of fixtures throughout the season across 3 formats, including T20, 50 overs and a 2-day match.

The season started with the appointment of Rob Harrison as Development Manager of the team, and the Cornwall CCC would like to thank Chris Hunkin for the time and energy he put into the development team.

Cornwall Development XI played 5 fixtures over 5 days in the 2023 season. Our first fixture took place at Truro CC in 2 x T20 matches against the Cornwall CCC, this was a great start to the season giving Cornwall Captain Paul Smith the opportunity to see all 22 players in action across the 2 matches, ahead of Cornwall’s opening T20 fixture. Cornwall Development XI lost both matches.

Our second fixture was a 50-over white ball match held at Paul CC v Cornwall U18, Cornwall Development XI dominated this match bowling the Under 18 out for 138 within 41 overs and chasing the 138 in 23 overs, a great performance to take into the next matches.

The third match was a 2-day fixture held at Falmouth v Devon Lions. Cornwall Development XI with a young side lost to a strong Devon Lion side, but each player had something to take away from the match and work on in future games – 2-day cricket is a great transition into 3-day cricket and the earlier exposure to this is the better for players with aspirations of playing at the highest level.

Our fourth and last fixture of the season took place away at Dorchester CC v Dorset which again Cornwall Development XI won convincingly by 97 runs. Cornwall with the more experienced side played a young but talented Dorset side, with Cornwall batting all 50 overs for 241 and bowling Dorset out for 144 after they got off to a great start, Cornwall Spin attack took control.

We would like to thank Captain Piran Kent for managing the players so well on the field and Michelle Kent for travelling with the team as scorer throughout the season.

2022

  • We played 4 days out of the planned 5 in 2022, a one-day game v the U18's at Hayle, a game rained off while en-route to Dorset at Dorchester, a one-day game v the Royal Navy at Taunton School and a 2-day game v Devon at Cornwood.
  • Piran Kent of Redruth captained the team during the season and did well in a team which changed considerably during the season meaning it was challenging to get any consistency on the field.
  • There were some decent performances during the games though, especially from some of the younger players such as Billy Taylor of Helston and Alfie Macdonald of Camborne, Piran himself was consistent in his performances. Ellis Whiteford and Luke Brenton also performed well, Ellis particularly standing out in the 2-day game v Devon.

The two one-day games were of value, the first 2 thirds of the 2 day game v Devon were of value, the last part of the Devon game, unfortunately, ended in a slight farce, those with experience of 2-day cricket will recognise the challenges in setting up a result situation, on this occasion the setting up and declaration saw Devon bat on.
