Highlights from the history of the County Club
1887 In the period 1887 to 1894, matches were played under the name of Cornwall.
W.E.T. Bolitho (Captain) scores the first century - 126 v Devon.
1890 Problems arose with it being recorded that Penzance had an EGM passing a resolution that the club regretted the result of the Devon v Cornwall match, considering that if a proper representative side had been selected, the result would have been more satisfactory and recommends the calling of an EGM to initiate the forming of a County Club. W.E.T. Bolitho, who was both skipper of Penzance and Cornwall, resigned as Penzance skipper, saying the meeting was not competent to question his actions with regard to the County team.
1894 To select the County side, Liskeard, St. Austell, Truro, Camborne and Penzance nominated a player, and the other 5 places were left to the Captain. W.E.T.Bolitho.
1894 The County Club is officially formed when on November 11th a Preliminary meeting was held at the Talbot Arms Hotel, Lostwithiel, presided by Lord Robartes (Lanhydrock). as a result of a letter 114 subscribers and 15 affiliated clubs contributed £151 6s 0d
1895 July 22-23 First official County match v Devon at Truro
1904 admitted to the 20-county Minor Counties Championship
1912 First really successful season Won 4 Lost 2 position 7th equal
1921 Return to Minor County Cricket after World War 1. Frank Whiting takes 10-26 v Wiltshire at Trowbridge
- Charles Shaw Baker (formerly Warwickshire) scores 756 runs at av of 63
- George Rogers (191) & Frank Whiting (36*) put on 132 for the tenth wicket v Dorset at Camborne
1932 Frank Whiting's career ends after 26 years and taking 888 wkts at 15.35 in 158 games.
1934 Harry Tresawna retires after 30 years as skipper – 166 games 6,315 runs and 114 wkts
1938 Best Season to date 4 wins 2 defeats Position 4th. George Rogers scores a record 194 v Dorset.
1946 Cricket resumes after World War 2
1947 It was passed for the General Committee to annually elect a Chairman for the ensuing season
1953 Finished 4th
- Roy Harris 192 and Bill Murphy 114 put on 329 v Berkshire at Camborne (all time 3rd wicket Minor County Championship Record for 61 years until 2015)
1969 Best season to date - 3rd in Championship and qualified for Gillette Cup (which had applied to top 5 Minor Counties since 1964). Skipper Robin Harvey tops Minor County averages with 57.66 to win the coveted Wilfred Rhodes Trophy. Jesse Lawry represents Minor Counties v West Indies and New Zealand.
1970 Gillette Cup - First appearance - lost to Glamorgan by 72 runs at Truro
1974 Best season to date - runners up to Oxfordshire (challenge match is drawn) David Halfyard takes all 16 wkts at Penzance v Dorset - 10-29 & 6-49 and wins Frank Edwards Trophy for topping Minor County Bowling Averages - 74 wkts
1975 Gillette Cup - lost to Oxfordshire at Cowley by 6 wkts
1976 Finished 3rd with Eric Willcock's 765 runs highest aggregate to date in a season
1977 Gillette Cup - lost to Lancashire by 118 runs at Truro
1979 Finished 5th
1980 Gillette Cup - lost by 145 runs to Devon at Exeter
1983 Championship was divided into East and West Divisions
- Nat West Trophy - lost by 204 runs to Derbyshire at Derby
- Eric Willcock retires after 139 appearances and a record 6,588 runs
1989 Stephen Williams scores a new record 854 runs in a season. Malcolm Dunstan retires after 139 appearances and a new record of 7,192 runs. Ed Nicolson scores the 100th Championship century v Dorset at Weymouth. Following the death of Chairman L.P. Northey, he is succeeded by Col Ron Potts.
- Chris Lovell (2-72) plays for the England Amateur XI v Scotland at Gateshead Fell.
1994 David Toseland retires after 21 years, 444 wickets and 163 Championship games
1995 Nat West Trophy - lost by 104 runs to Middlesex at St Austell
Chris Lovell wins Frank Edwards Trophy for topping Minor County Bowling Averages
Finished 4th in the West Division in the club's Centenary season.
1996 Nat West Trophy - lost by 133 runs to Warwickshire at St Austell
Finished 5th in West Division but failed to qualify for Nat West by 1pt.
- MCC Trophy is expanded to a Group Format and becomes the ECB 38 County Competition.
Grade Rules cricket is introduced to three of the nine Championship games - 2-year experiment)
1999 NatWest Trophy is expanded to include all Minor Counties – Cornwall lose by 137 runs to Cumberland.
Stephen Williams becomes 4th player to reach 5,000 runs. Brian Laity elected Team Manager
- Mrs Anita George becomes the first lady Secretary of the Club and the first lady to hold such a post in the Country. Grade Rules format is abandoned after 2 seasons.
Collection of all Minor County full scores project (1895 to the present day) launched.
Nat West Trophy - lost to Norfolk by 4 wkts at Truro
- Three-Day Championship cricket is introduced.
Stephen Williams - 4th highest runscorer - 5,361 runs in 93 Championship games retires
C & G Trophy - beat Cheshire by 3 wkts at Camborne and lost to Sussex by 33 runs at Truro
C & G Trophy - playing of early rounds the previous season introduced - beat Cheshire at Toft by 65 runs
2002 C & G Trophy – lost to Worcestershire by 49 runs at Truro and beat Somerset CB & Wales MC
Charlie Shreck’s 41 wickets is the 2nd best in the championship. Finished 4th in the West Division.
Godfrey Furse succeeds Brian Laity as Team Manager
2003 C & G Trophy lost to Kent by 5 wkts at Truro. Lost in Amsterdam to Netherlands by 12 runs (C & G 2004) Finished 3rd in West Division – Highest since 1976. Tom Sharp wins MCCA Frank Edwards Trophy
- 100th anniversary of entry to the Championship. Ryan Driver wins the Wilfred Rhodes Trophy for topping the Minor County Batting Averages. Gary Thomas equals Malcolm Dunstan’s record 12 centuries. Thomas, Driver & Sharp become the first three batsmen to score a century in same innings in the first championship win away to Devon since 1979.
- MCCA Trophy semi-final reached for first time. Gary Thomas breaks record with 13th Championship century. A record 8 Championship centuries scored. Mrs A.M. George, JP elected to MCCA Committee.
- Douglas Nance retires after 19 years as Treasurer. Keith Hore, JP. replaces him.
- Julian Williams Esq. retires as President after 40 years. Rev. Canon Ken Rogers succeeds him.

2008 Tom Sharp again captains Minor Counties Representative XI. Hon. Sec Mrs A.M. George awarded MBE
2009 Brian ‘Condor’ Holder (County scorer 1987-2008) dies aged 58. Finished 2nd in West Division . Best since 1974
2010 Keith Parsons captained ECB Unicorns and Tom Sharp plays in the game against Somerset.
2011 Keith Parsons captained ECB Unicorns. MH, JK & TC Rowe become the first set of 3 brothers in a game
2012 Rev. Canon Ken Rogers retires as President and is succeeded by Col R. W. Potts, who stands down as Chairman after 23 years. He is succeeded by Michael Williams, FRICS, DL of Werrington Park.
Minor Counties Championship won for the first time. Tom Sharp double of 4,000 runs & 200 wickets.
2013 Tom Sharp steps down as captain – the second-longest serving in the county’s history.
2015 Unicorns KO Trophy won for the first time.
