Charles ‘Douglas’ Nance RIP
It is with great sadness that Cornwall County Cricket Club announces the death of Life Member and former County Treasurer Douglas Nance at the age of 94.
He passed away peacefully at his East Looe home of 50 years, on 4th December 2024, surrounded by family.
After the sudden death, on the golf course, of Frank Hobbs in August 1986 Doug took over as the Honorary Treasurer of the County Club.
He held office for over 19 years before current incumbent Keith Hore JP succeeded him in March 2006.
At that Annual Meeting Doug thanked both the committee and players for their help over the years, and said he had been proud to represent his native islands.
He was made a Life Member in recognition of his service.
That followed the award of the Arthur Lugg Cup in 2000 for outstanding services to the County Club.
Doug was a proud Scillionian, having been born on the island of St Martins on 21 June 1930.
After moving to the mainland he was educated at Truro School where he was a keen cricketer and rugby player.
He played cricket for the village club Townshend, near Hayle, who were members of the Cornwall Cricket League up until 1962.
The likes of Camborne CC came calling but Doug remained loyal to his village club.
He married Jean, who survives him along with their three sons, Christopher, Jonathan, Peter, two grandchildren Adam and Karen and his sister Jill.
Along with his sons he was a member of Looe Cricket Club who shared a ground with Polperro FC at Killigarth before moving to the Community School at East Looe.
The club amalgamated with Menheniot CC in 2009 with Doug playing his part.
Doug and Mike Conbeer were elected as joint Presidents, a post he held until stepping down in recent times for health reasons.
His working career was with Barclays Bank spanning 38 years and will be best remembered as the manager of the Isles of Scilly and Looe branches respectively.
In retirement, he travelled the country with Cornwall CCC in the company of the Chairman Col Ronnie Potts TD, JP, DL.
They were great friends and could often be found enjoying 18 holes at their local Looe Golf Club.
Doug was a great servant to Cornish Cricket and will sadly be missed by many friends around the county and wider beyond.
