Cornwall’s NV Play Trophy (50 over) hopes are still alive after a three-wicket win against Wales National Counties at Wadebridge on Holiday Monday, in a low-scoring game. It follows the opening defeat by nine wickets at Dorset the previous weekend. Having elected to bat, the Welsh lost Cameron Hemp and Matthew Ryan for 23 to Ben Ellis. Wickets continued to tumble with only the new Penzance batter, Sam King, making much of an impression with 31. He was ninth out, excellently caught by Billy Taylor in the deep. Opener Sami Khan (29) was one of three victims for Ryan Tonkin at 39-3. Will MacVicar and Ellis Whiteford both took two wickets.

In the Cornwall reply, Taylor made 17 at a run a ball before being bowled by the Penzance seamer Tom Dinnis, playing against his former county. Tom Orpe was bowled by Rhodri Lewis for nine. Former Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent made 26 before being third out at 77. Cornwall lost another four wickets in getting over the line, including debutant Harry Phillips. The Grampound Road batter, who has transferred from Truro, was run out for 18. MacVicar and skipper Paul Smith came and went before the winning runs were scored, with 22 overs unused.
