Cornwall gave their NCCA T20 campaign a boost with two wins over Dorset at St Austell.
With professionals Will MacVicar and Alex Blake unavailable, Cornwall relied on a homegrown squad, and it produced the goods.
They hit 201-4 in the first game with St Just’s Neil Curnow making 41. He last played for the county a decade ago and came in as a late replacement for injured Alex Bone. Werrington’s John Moon hit Cornwall’s highest T20 score of 103 not out in the 56-run win.
In the second game, Moon was at it again with 52 as the target of 123 was reached for the loss of three wickets in 15 overs. 18-year-old Helston, and former Perranporth slow left armer, Bryn Evans took 4-14 on debut from his four overs.
NCCA Report - Paul Bolton
There was a county record score for Cornwall’s John Moon in the first match of the day against Dorset at St Austell.
The Werrington batter pummelled 103 not out from just 39 balls – an innings that included ten sixes and six fours – which took Cornwall to 201 for four. Moon’s century was Cornwall’s second in the competition and surpassed the 101 that Alex Blake made against Dorset at Wimborne last year.
Moon’s innings overshadowed the very rare instance of a father and son playing together in county cricket with the St Just pair of Neil and Logan Curnow making important contributions to Cornwall’s 56 runs victory.
Neil, 44, made 41 in his first county appearance in eight years with 17-year-old Logan taking three for 35 to restrict Dorset to 145 for eight.
Moon followed up by making 52 in the second match of the day to help Cornwall to a seven-wicket win, which was secured with five overs to spare.
Slow left-armer Bryn Evans took four for 14 on his Cornwall debut and seamer Ben Ellis three for 21 to dismiss Dorset for 123 with nine balls of their allocation unused.
With Moon in such a dominant mood, it was never going to be enough to challenge Cornwall, who moved into second place in the group ahead of Wiltshire on superior run rate
