Reigning champions Dorset completed a comprehensive nine-wicket win with almost 17 overs to spare. After losing Karl Leathley in the sixth over, we suffered a double blow in the tenth over. Former Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent was caught at deep cover for five, and three balls later, fellow debutant Oscar Coleman followed at 37-3. Charlie Mumford went on to make 56 on his first appearance, which included 10 fours and a six off 56 balls. Alfie MacDonald, deputising as skipper for Paul Smith, made 28 at 90-4 off 18 overs. Tom Orpe held the rest of the innings together to be the last out for 42 at 186 all out, with a ball short of eleven overs unused. Slow left-armer Mo Abbas took 4-37.

Ryan Tonkin took a wicket on debut, trapping Finn Gordon for 11 with the score at 27 at the beginning of the sixth over. Dylan Church (96no) and Joseph Eckland (75no) then put on an unbroken 162  for the second wicket to win the game convincingly with all but 17 overs to spare.

NCCA Preview

Trophy holders Dorset begin their title defence against Cornwall at Wimborne in Group Four, where nine of the side which beat Shropshire in last season’s final will play.

The exceptions are all-rounder Will Chesterman, a product of Somerset’s youth system, who makes his National Counties debut, and Mo Abbas.

Cornwall gives debuts to four players, including former Gloucestershire batter Chris Dent. Charlie Mumford, a batter/wicketkeeper, has previous National Counties experience with Hertfordshire in 2023. He is now a student at Exeter University.

Helston seamer Ryan Tonkin and Oscar Coleman, a Cornwall-born all-rounder who is on Somerset’s academy, will also have their first taste of National Counties cricket.
