DEVON are back in the hunt for a place in the last eight of the National Counties Trophy after routing Cornwall by 96 runs to shoot up to second in their qualifying pool.
Anything other than a win at Redruth would have left Devon relying on helpful results elsewhere to make it into one of top-two knockout stage qualifying spots.
Beating Cornwall, for the first time in three white-ball meetings, lifted Devon from second bottom to second top in their pool.
A win over pool leaders Berkshire at Blundell’s School, Tiverton this Sunday will cement Devon’s place in the quarter-finals. A defeat will bring net run rate into play in a three-way equation with either Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, who meet at Tring Park.
Fin Hill top scored for Devon with 82 in a 34-over total of 214 for eight. Bad weather meant 16 overs a side were lost from the game.
Devon lost Ben Privett and skipper James Horler getting as far as 42 for two, then kicked on during a stand of 97 between Sam Elstone (56) and Hill.
Hill, Devon raised before becoming part of the Somerset development programme, was the last man out in the penultimate over.
“Fin Hill showed why he's a pro and Sam Elstone put in a gritty performance against a pretty experienced bowling attack,” said Horler.
Will MacVicar topped the bowling stats for Cornwall with four for 26. Hill was his final victim. Lewis Goldsworthy’s seven-over allocation only cost 25 runs and included Horler, who was caught behind.
Devon needed early wickets to put pressure on Cornwall – and opening bowler Josh Nott obliged by sending back openers Xavie Clarke and Goldsworthy. Alex Bone made 38 of the first 49 on the board before Matt Jeacock picked him off.
“We never let them get going after we had them two down,” said Horler. “Jeacock and Nott bowled brilliantly up top and gave Cornwall nothing.
Dangerman Graham Wagg – Devon have suffered at his hands before – was in and out for nine: the first of three wickets for spinner Callum Harvey (3-21).
Paul Smith, caught at deep mid-wicket, was the first of three poles for spinner Sam Read, who worked through the bottom half of the order in tandem with Harvey. The last three wickets tumbled in just nine balls as Cornwall were bowled out for 118.
Said Horler: “Our spin attack again was superb. We kept pressure on and the batsmen eventually just chipped up somewhere.”
Reflecting on the game, Horler said: “Topped them at every discipline. It was one of our best performances all-round in a white-ball game during my period as captain.”
“Couldn't have given us more confidence going into another big game against Berkshire. Win and were through, but NRR could help us if we're not on the winning side.”
And on ending the losing streak against Cornwall, Horler said: “We spoke about bringing the good bits together in one game, and did exactly that. It is always nice to prove that jam definitely sits on top of the cream!”
It was a low note to end the Trophy campaign for Cornwall, who will finish bottom of the four-team.
Skipper Smith said things can only get better when the National Counties Twenty-20 competition starts later this month.
“We underachieved in all three disciplines throughout this format,” said Smith. Unfortunately, if that happens consistently then you don't win too many games of cricket.
“Hopefully, a week off now and a fresh competition will help us reset and bounce back stronger, which we know we can.”
