Cornwall (2) beat Devon by 36 runs.

Cornwall’s NCCA Trophy campaign got off to a winning start on when they defeated Devon by 36 runs in a high-scoring game at Truro.

Cornwall made 303 for 8 with opener Jack Paull getting a county-best 63.

Will MacVicar made 50 with the pair putting on 102 for the second wicket following the early loss of Christian Purchase.

Xavier Clarke made 31 but a mini-collapse saw the home side slip to 184-6 off 36 overs.

However, 16-year-old Kian Roberts, son of former Cornwall and Northants batter David, then played excellent innings on debut.

He hit his first delivery for a boundary and went on to make 32 off 23 balls, adding 53 for the seventh wicket with Paul Smith.

The skipper went on to make an unbeaten 60 off 45 balls.

Tommy Sturgess played a cameo hitting 4 sixes in his 32 off 19 balls before being caught in the deep in the final over.

The 303-8 was Cornwall’s ninth-highest in the 41 years of the competition and the best against Devon in the 24 meetings.

Josh Thomas and James Horler put on 80 for Devon’s first wicket.

They were 227-5 with eight overs remaining but the unfortunate run out of Calum Haggett for 60  ended their hopes.

Spinner Max Trythonos took 5-38 – the sixth-best figures by a Cornwall bowler in the competition.
