Peter Batchelor Funeral Arrangements

4th December 2018 Posted in People by Michael Weeks

The funeral will be held on Wednesday 12 December at 11.30am at Perranzabuloe Parish Church followed by a wake at the Tywarnhayle Inn, Perranporth.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Peter Batchelor, aged 70, following recent illness.

Peter was the President of Perranporth Cricket Club, sharing a similar post with the resort’s football club.

He was a former player, groundsman, scorer and long-serving secretary of the Cricket Club.

He was also formerly the proprietor of the Ponsmere Hotel, overlooking the beach at Perranporth.

The venue hosted the Cornwall Schools Cricket Association’s Presentation Evening for 32 consecutive years from 1984 to 2015.

Robert Jobson, former Western Morning News journalist, CCL Management Committee /CACG Secretary and President of Veryan Cricket Club has sent this tribute.

“I  knew him well in the period 1959 to 1964 when we were boarders at St Petroc’s School, Bude.

At that early age, 8 to 13, he was a gifted sportsman: captain, opening batsman and wicketkeeper for the cricket XI, and a goal-scoring inside forward for the football team.
He went on to Blundell’s, Tiverton.
His parents owned the Ponsmere Hotel, which he took over.
Although work restricted his cricket, his talent as a batsman invariably shone through.
Lancashire’s Under 15 squad and their supporters always looked forward to staying at the Ponsmere on  tour. “

Cornwall Cricket sends its condolences to both Peter’s family and Perranporth Cricket Club at this sad time.

Details of funeral arrangements will be posted here when known.
