Cornwall Over 50’s lost by 5 wkts

What a disappointing season it was to become with one win  and four losses and the rest of the games cancelled by the weather.

The game at Bude saw them amass a total of 217 for 7 and Cornwall in reply 101 all out with only Ian Mills scoring 36, bowling performance on the day goes to M.Taylor with 5 for 34.

A much closer game was achieved at Truro School with the over 50’s setting a target of 188 with Trevor Lee falling short of his century with 98 and his partnership buddy Phil Payne with 21. Truro school took it to the wire achieving  179 all out with notable performances from Truro school boys S.Firth 30 and C.Armstrong 38. But with bowling performances from Trevor Lee 3-45,

Phil Payne 2-11 and  Ken Gibbard and Mark Whitfield bagging two wickets each made an exciting finish right up to the last ball. An exciting win. Credit must go to the caterers for a superb lunch and tea as always.

At St.Mawgan they took Cornwall’s bowling apart with a 103 from S.Millant, C.Archer 66 and Jasper 44. Cornwall struggled to reply eventually reaching 150 all out with an explosive display of batting by Chris Cole 55 with 6 sixes and 4 fours in 23 balls and Martin Orpe making a well earned 50 which brought some respectability to Cornwall’s innings. Down to the local pub to drown our sorrows.

At Falmouth Wayfarers game a closer encounter was to take place with Cornwall reaching a total of 177 with runs across the team but S.Johnson shone with 54. Falmouth replied with 178 for 5 taking the game to the last ball with E.Osner getting 50 and good bowling performance from Phil Payne of 3-22. A good close game.

In the last game of the season, which was the hottest day of the season Cornwall reached 176  with batting performances from Chris Lomas and Ken Hicks 30 runs each, Whitchurch reached the total in 35 overs with a match winning performance of 66 by M. Kerswill. Several players suffered in the heat today and were quick to reach the bar for a nice cold pint of lager.

I would like to thank all the hosts and the managers for getting teams together despite sometimes not starting the games. The games that did start were enjoyable and friendships continued and made. Also to Geoff Husband for planning of the games and also for Phil Payne for bringing in players and his support.

What a disappointing season 2016 proved to be. Probably for the first time ever no victories were recorded and the eight games that were played resulted in four losses and four draws. But by far the most disappointing aspect of the season was the fact that no fewer than fourteen games were cancelled,   mainly due to the poor weather we experienced.

The first game to be played was as late as July 3rd, and a poor game it proved to be.    After being set the daunting target of 333 runs Cornwall were left with little option but to play for a draw, finishing on 83-2.

The game at Truro School was lost mainly due to a fine century by Ben Ellis.     Phil Payne’s fine half century helped to make a game of it

The scorecards show that there were few performances worthy of mention in the eight games.    Trevor Lee’s 69 at Tideford and Phil Payne’s 50 at Truro School were the only half-centuries recorded. There were just two 3-wicket hauls, by Ian Mill and Mark Everett,   at Lanhydrock and Elephant’s Nest respectively.

Finally a word of thanks to all those helpers at the clubs who  hosted these games. They are an integral part of the Over 50s set-up. Thanks also to Tiflex for providing Oxbridge balls for the games

 Friendly Report for 2015

Sadly nine of the twenty scheduled games were called off and one abandoned.       So only ten games were completed and the playing record was –  Won 2, Lost 3 and  Drawn 5

There were a few highlights, notably a fine 92 at Whitchurch by Prakesh Joshi,  who has now moved away from the area and is now qualified to play for Surrey Over Fifties,  having just reached that milestone.       What an There were only two other scores above 50. Mike Kent made 59 at St Erme as well as taking 2-32 and Paul Clements , 53 not out,  dominated a 5th wicket stand of 90 with Geoff Husband, 22 not out
at Tideford.
The C. Green who featured in the Palmers game with runs and wickets was,  in fact,   on loan from the visitors. The only 4 wicket haul was by John Pollard,  4-38, in the last game of the year at
The Elephant’s Nest. Ian Mill had a good season but seemed unable to get beyond 40.His main scores were  39, 38, 37, 37 and 30  – quite remarkable.
That really is all there is to say about the friendly games. We must hope for better weather in 2016. If you are over 46 and keen to join in the fun, even if you do not feel you are good enough to make our
Championship side, then please contact Geoff Husband on 01579 350379.
Many thanks to Tiflex who very kindly supplied Oxbridge Cricket Balls for use in the friendly matches.
