Over 50's Semi-Final
Longton CC , Stoke-on-Trent - Cornwall 147, Staffordshire 148-7
Cornwall O50's best ever season ended when they lost to Staffordshire by 3 wickets in the ECB O50 semi final in front of a crowd of around 200 at Longton CC.
Batting first on a tricky pitch Cornwall made a steady start but then a mini collapse saw four wickets fall for 12 runs in 6 overs as 27-0 became 39-4.
Jim McKenna was caught at deep square leg, Anton Luiten at slip, Alan Shears by the keeper and Andrew Jones was trapped in front.
Jon Nance and skipper Trevor Lee steadied the ship but an excellent catch saw the end of Nance for 23 in the 28th over with the score 81.
Lee’s run a ball 52, which included 4 towering straight sixes, ended when former Test player Kim Barnett took a find catch low down at point off a full bloodied cut.
Paul Clements was run out for 19 and both Stuart Renshaw and Ian Bishop fell to excellent catches as Cornwall closed on 147.
Bishop made a early breakthrough and when Stuart Renshaw took wickets with successive balls the hosts were 54-3 after 15 overs.
Barnett and Abe Butler added a patient 44 in 18 overs during which Steve Mitchell bowled 9 overs for 15 runs before Barnett pushed at Clements and lobbed a catch to McKenna at short cover having made 48 in 32 overs.
A wicket for Shears and two for Dave Dunnett reduced the home side to 130 for 7 but with Cornwall on the attack the hosts gradually got over the line with 14 balls to spare.
Disappointing for Cornwall but to have got this far in the competition is testimony to the strength of this year’s squad including those who didn’t play in this match - John Dobson, Mike Hoban, Nigel Sanders, Danny Gilman, Dave Craddock, Andrew Ellacott and Mike Conbeer.
Anyone interested in joining the squad for 2016 needs to be able to play at county one / div 2 level and should make contact with either skipper Trevor Lee on 07785 390717 or team manager Stuart Ellis on 01208 73230
