Overnight frosts in August, with non-stop rain on the last bank holiday of the summer - just a few more challenges that Mother Nature decided to throw at us, as groundsmen and greenkeepers around the UK were trying to get fixtures on and preparing for their end of season renovations. September is the critical month for all summer sports. The quality of the renovation work done at this time of year will determine the quality of the playing surfaces for next. Some dry weather will be required, when loams and topdressings are applied. The key is having all the materials to hand for when the opportunity arises. As with most things in life, it's all about timing. The forecasters say we have a nice Indian summer on the way. Let's hope they're right. I reckon Mother Nature owes us that, at the very least. Good luck. Cheers Dave Saltman
POND LIFE was the theme for August's photo competition. The date for entries has now closed, but there is still time to vote on the shortlist of four. For September, we are again challenging you to be inventive, with a MATCH DAY theme. Each monthly winner will receive a £100 Pitchcare voucher. All monthly winners qualify for entry into an end of year competition, with Photographic Equipment to the value of £500 for the overall winner. Entries for September can now be submitted.
